Zion 100k Ultra Marathon Race Report

Image
Instead of blogging about this entire race experience I’m going to just cover my drama filled final hours here. Check out this video about the entire race:  https://youtu.be/u5ewJdD1790   Now to recap the after dark activities starting at miles 45 ish. When the lights went out in Zion close to 9 PM I was on a wide open dirt road. EzPz for starters. My trucker chest lights illuminated the path perfectly.  There were 2 loops left to finish the race. One was eight miles long and the next one was five and a half miles. For the record, I hate running this type of course at night. I put it out of my mind but knew when the time came that I would just have to suck it up for a couple/few hours. The faster I ran during the day, the less time I would have to spend out at night. That didn’t exactly pan out the way I hoped.  Trails are marked by reflector ribbons every 20 to 50 yards.  Once you see one you know you’re going the right way. If you don’t see one for a while, you’re probably off course

2022 Week 1 : Great start and snow angels to cool down.

Image
Week 1 of 2022 was like the beginning of any new hobby or initiative. A lot of energy and tons of "I've got this" feelings and making working out a priority. Having been there, done that sooo many times I take no credit for the really good start to the long journey I've embarked upon. Adrenaline and this social accountability I've created played a great role. Having said all this, the week is in the books and it is a solid accomplishment. Here are the stats which I'll detail down below. This snow angel explained later Before getting into the daily grind I wanted to share a few things I've added, resumed and learned about this week. First is Yoga.  I was introduced to Yoga With Adriene while at a friend's beach house a couple of years ago. I've followed her YouTube channel ever since and must admit I'm closer to touching my toes than I ever was before but I never fully committed. With the new year she has released a new 30 day challenge like she

My addiction to Ironman

Image
I'm almost done with a book called Dopamine Nation by Dr. Anna Lembke.  From Amazon: This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting… The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption.   I'm as addicted to some of the above as the rest of the world. My biggest vice comes in the form of adventure sports and at the top of the list is Ironman triathlon racing. For me there is no better dopamine rush than the one that is triggered at the finish line after swimming 2.4 mil

Alaska : Denali (Mt. Mckinley) Expedition

Image
With unfinished business from my 2014 expedition on Denali I booked a second attempt with my favorite tour company RMI. I purposefully selected the expedition lead by Hannah Smith as I though she did an incredible job getting me and my team to the summit of Aconcagua, elevation 23,000 ft, the highest mountain in South America located in Argentina in February 2019.  I’m writing this as I go along and am currently at basecamp at 7,300 ft but I already see that her knowledge, skills and leadership will result in another memorable adventure. Summit or not. Hopefully the former since every RMI team ahead of us has successfully done so this climbing season.   Denali, also known by its former name of Mt McKinley, is the highest mountain peak of North America with a summit elevation of 20,310 ft (6,190 m) above sea level. With a topographical prominence of 20,194 ft (6,155 m) and topographic isolation of 4,621 miles (7,436 km) Denali is the third most prominent and third most isolated peak on
